Colorado's African Communities

An Eventful Saturday

With four different events being held this Saturday, there is certainly no shortage of happenings to keep you busy over the weekend. Here's a rundown of what's going on:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Walk for Sudan kicks things off at 1pm with their annual 5k walk/run which benefits a number of organizations working in Sudan.

"The Walk for Sudan aims to raise funds for projects supporting the people and country of Sudan, which is recovering from 20 years of civil war. The Walk for Sudan symbolizes unity as traditional rivals come together for a common cause. Sudanese from various tribes and students from different schools and districts will all join forces in a spirit of cooperation." - from the Walk for Sudan Website.

Next up, the 1010 Project is holding its Annual Benefit Dinner to help fund its work advocating for and empowering social entrepreneurs in Kenya.

The evening will feature a silent auction, delicious dinner, and a short program in which 1010 will present some of its current work in Kenya, as well as its vision for expansion. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Peter Van Arsdale, Senior Lecturer at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. In addition, there will be ample opportunities to network with other people who believe in and support the important poverty relief work that the 1010 Project is promoting in Kenya. The event begins at 6pm. More details here.

Also at 6pm, African Nations United for Change is hosting an evening of African Culture in support of the US Presidential Candidate with African heritage (we'll leave it up to you to figure out which one). The event takes place at the new Reception at Kamsy Event Center in Aurora, and will feature drumming, dj, delicious African catering, and an address by Keynote Speaker Terrence Carroll (D) Assistant Majority Leader Colorado State House Representative District 7. See our Events Page for full details.

Last but not least, Transafrika Cultural Institutes hosts a benefit concert in Davis Auditorium at the University of Denver. In addition to a fantastic lineup of musicians at The Transafrika Benefit they will have Arts and Crafts from Africa from Andrew Malumbe, a silent auction and Special Guest "Julie Pech, the Chocolate Therapist."

So maybe you won't be able to attend all these events, but do get out to at least one and support your community. Who knows, you might even have fun!
