Colorado's African Communities

MTV Africa Music Awards Debut – November 22

So, you're suffering from post-election withdrawal? Has the election that gave the US its first president of African descent left you longing for more of the democratic process?

Well, you're in luck. It's time to vote for your favorite African music for MTV's first ever African Music Awards happening November 22nd in Abuja, Nigeria.

The postponement of the Kora Awards from December of this year to April of 2009 has given MTV a perfect window through which to introduce their Mama Music Awards. The event also establishes another frontier on which MTV Base is challenging competitor Channel O, whose Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards happened just last month.

Prior to the awards show, an all-star concert tour will visit Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos beginning this week.

  1. Coldplay?! Who in their right mind thinks Coldplay qualifies as an African act?
Or, for that matter, The Game or Lil' Wayne?!

Please people, don't make bother having such awards if you're not at least going to try to include African artists.

I'm surprised that the reality shows aren't up for awards - they've got more credibility than this selection.

When is Africa finally going to say, this is enough - we want to be proudly African. This is a farce of the worst kind.

  2. Yeah Alex, it does make you scratch your head and wonder how they got included. The Game, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Rihanna - they could all conceivably be considered part of the "African Diaspora" if MTV felt they needed to include acts from beyond the continent. But Coldplay is just one of those "really?!" moments.

The Kora Awards have separate categories for diaspora and non-African artists, and that seems like a better way to go. Kora also includes less "pop" acts in categories like Best Traditional Artist, Best Spiritual Artist, Best Arrangement.

To me the Kora Awards represent what this type of music awards event should be. But unfortunately they can't get their stuff together.
Until then, they are giving MTV a chance to fill that gap.

  3. did alicia key appear at the mama music awards.... i will like some one togive me an answer..... my friend is stupid and wont beleive me

  4. Lawal, Alicia Keys did appear on the program, though she didn't attend the event in person. She gave a video acceptance speech after winning the best R&B award. Other winners are listed here: http://metroafrican.com/2008/11/23/mtv-africa-music-awards-winners/
