Lawal, Alicia Keys did appear on the program, though she didn't attend the event in person. She gave a video acceptance speech after winning the best R&B award. Other winners are listed here: http://metroafrican.com/2008/11/23/mtv-africa-music-awards-winners/

Yeah Alex, it does make you scratch your head and wonder how they got included. The Game, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Rihanna - they could all conceivably be considered part of the "African Diaspora" if MTV felt they needed to include acts from beyond the continent. But Coldplay is just one of those "really?!" moments.

The Kora Awards have separate categories for diaspora and non-African artists, and that seems like a better way to go. Kora also includes less "pop" acts in categories like Best Traditional Artist, Best Spiritual Artist, Best Arrangement.

To me the Kora Awards represent what this type of music awards event should be. But unfortunately they can't get their stuff together.
Until then, they are giving MTV a chance to fill that gap.

Coldplay?! Who in their right mind thinks Coldplay qualifies as an African act?
Or, for that matter, The Game or Lil' Wayne?!

Please people, don't make bother having such awards if you're not at least going to try to include African artists.

I'm surprised that the reality shows aren't up for awards - they've got more credibility than this selection.

When is Africa finally going to say, this is enough - we want to be proudly African. This is a farce of the worst kind.
