Colorado Guardsman trained by Zulus in South African bush
Master Sgt. Robert Seifert, a Colorado Army Guardsman from Special Operation Command - Africa, displays the first fish the survival course team caught on day one. During the three-week course, U.S. Army NCOs were taught to fish using sticks, homemade string and improvised hooks - thankfully catching bigger fish than this, Siefert said. The National Guard website posted a story about a program in which South African instructors taught U.S. Army officers how to survive in the wild, with little more than a rifle and canteen. The instructors were Zulus, veteran soldiers who grew up in the bush and fought with the SASF in Angola in the early 1980’s.
Of the instructors one U.S. Guardsman said "“They are very proficient and know the bush like Wikipedia in their heads... if you’re thirsty, they know a plant with buds growing underneath that can fill your canteen.”
