“When I say I’m an African that confuses a lot of people in the U.S.,” joked Three Cups of Tea author Greg Mortenson, referring to his childhood in Tanzania. Perhaps best known for his work in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Mortenson said East Africa remains close to his heart.

Mortenson was in Denver this week to help launch AfricAid’s new program – the Kisa Project – and to host the Journey of Hope, a multimedia benefit concert highlighting the work of young people making a difference.

Mortenson spoke to a group of AfricAid supporters prior to the Journey of Hope, praising AfricAid’s accomplishments and endorsing the forthcoming Kisa Project. ‘Kisa’ from the Kiswahili meaning ‘story’ is a fitting name for the program designed to foster communication between families and groups in the U.S. with young scholars in Tanzania. In addition to his kind words, Mortenson announced he had secured $10,000 in donations to help in the launch of the Kisa Project.

AfricAid Executive Director, Ashley Shuyler, was one of five young people recognized at the Journey of Hope, having founded AfricAid eight years ago at the age of 16. Since 2001 AfricAid has raised nearly $700,000 to support girls’ education in East Africa.
