Colorado's African Communities

Elephant Energy

Elephant Energy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Denver, Colorado and Katima Mulilo, Namibia. The organization was founded by Doug Vilsack, a young Colorado lawyer with extensive experience working in Namibia on various projects with the World Wildlife Fund. In August 2008, Doug carried 50 BoGo solar-powered flashlights to Namibia in his backpack for use in benefit distribution plans to be drafted by local community-based conservation organizations called "Conservancies." The demand for these cheap, durable lights was enormous, prompting additional efforts to bring BoGo lights to Namibia, as well as other useful renewable energy technologies designed for use in rural communities in developing countries. After a year of extensive on-the-ground work in Namibia, Elephant Energy's volunteers have lit hundreds of households with clean, renewable energy and are working on numerous other projects to promote small-scale renewable energy development in Namibia and the Caprivi Region.
